RESOURCES ON THE ENVIRONMENT

In the 1970s, the Rhine region was the focus of a vast industrialisation plan. On both sides of the Rhine, major projects for factories and nuclear power plants were underway, but they quickly faced strong opposition from local residents. These cross-border struggles brought together French, German and Swiss citizens alike, making Alsace a hotbed of the anti-nuclear movement. The movement became politically organised in 1973 with the creation of France's first environmentalist party: Écologie et survie (Ecology and Survival).

Born in Strasbourg in 1934, Solange Fernex is a leading figure in the French and Alsatian environmental movement. Elected to the European Parliament in 1989, she co-founded France's first environmental party, Écologie et survie, with Antoine Waechter in 1973. Armed with her Super 8 camera, she tirelessly documented the protests against industrialisation and nuclearisation in the Rhine region from the 1970s to the 1980s. She leaves behind some twenty films that provide a wealth of insight into the French and international anti-nuclear movement.

Dr Pierre Schmidt, who passed away just over 30 years ago, was undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in the Ried region. He grew up in Bruch de l'Andlau and later discovered the Ried d'Erstein, the Ried d'Herbsheim and many others, not to mention the nearby Rhine Forest. All these magnificent natural environments made such a deep impression on him that he became their living memory.
