Ciné-Archives, fonds audiovisuel du PCF et du mouvement ouvrier
CINE-ARCHIVES preserves and showcases the audiovisual archives of the French Communist Party and labour movement.
Alongside a collection of professional films from the 1920s onwards, which were made at the initiative of the Communist Party, trade unions (especially the CGT) and groups within companies or organisations like the Secours Populaire charity, MRAP (anti-racism movement) and the Union of French Women, CINE-ARCHIVES also preserves films by amateur film-makers about disputes that took place in factories, neighbourhoods or towns.
Together, these films depict working-class France over the last century, and also touch on world history and international solidarity: the Spanish Civil War, the Vietnam War, the demonstrations to free Angela Davis and Nelson Mandela, the struggle against Apartheid, documentaries on the wars of decolonisation, etc.
Over 900 films are available for viewing on the CINE-ARCHIVES website: www.cinearchives.org
Since 2015, CINE-ARCHIVES is also responsible for distributing the works of the film director, producer and actor Med Hondo (1936-2019). His films on the history of colonisation, from the transatlantic deportation of slaves to the uprisings in Françafrique (France’s sphere of influence in Africa), condemn every form of oppression and exploitation endured by people in Africa, the Antilles and Metropolitan France.
CINE-ARCHIVES’ activities encompass indexing and cataloguing, mechanically restoring and digitising film reels, programming film screenings and conferences, distributing films to cinemas, publishing DVDs and image licensing for archive-based documentaries.
